The Alberta Drama Festival Association (ADFA) is a volunteer, not-for-profit organization whose mandate is to encourage, develop and maintain community theatre in Alberta, The main vehicle for pursuing this mandate is the adult, non-professional one-act play festivals held throughout Alberta.
Regional organizations in each of nine zones host annual festivals, which bring together community groups in a celebration and sharing of theatre excellence. these festivals are adjudicated by a theatre professional or educator who elevates and provides constructive criticism to all participants. The adjudicator also selects one play to represent the region at the annual provincial festival, which is held in a different community each year.
ADFA was formed in 1969 to assume the festival organization duties formerly run by the Drama Department of Alberta Culture but its traditions stem from community festivals that date back to early 1930’s. The organization’s Board of Directors consists of the President, Vice President, Secretary, Treasurer, and representatives from each of the nine regions.
While there are many established community theatre groups that present a wide range of entertainment in these festivals, new participants and volunteers are most welcome.
